PBS MediaShift blog seeks 'embedded' contributors at news organizations

Mark Glaser at MediaShift:
"As the redesign and revamp of the MediaShift site continues apace, I am looking for a few good folks to serve as correspondents for MediaShift, so I can get better insight into industries or worlds that I cover only occasionally. My hope is that with a group of 10 to 15 correspondents, I’ll be able to give my community of readers and contributors more food for thought…

Free music for your slideshows and videos? (Free like beer, free like speech)

A frequently asked question I take from newsrooms is "So can I just use any music I want to go with my slideshow (or video)?" (Putting aside, for the moment, the question of whether or not you *need* any music to go with those 22 photos of local high school graduations.) What are your favorite sources for free, OK-for-commercial-use music? My first and only choice on my list is ccmixter.org, if for no other reason than because the tracks are clearly la… Continue

See you in Vegas?

If, by any chance, any of the 1989 (!) of you will be at the E&P Interactive conference in Las Vegas this week, shoot me an e-mail or direct message on Twitter and we'll throw down a cup of coffee or other liquid in between sessions.

Why maintain a personal brand?

I've encouraged reporters to go out and get themselves a blog and start participating online in every social network that interests them, and maybe a few that don't, because you never know who you'll find there. But as you're jumping into the fray online to build up a body of work and try your hand at new technologies, remember to make it easy for your friends, colleagues, readers, sources, and potential employers to know who you are and how to reach you. File this under "maintaining a persona… Continue

Invisible Inkling

The stenography ends here

A few takeaways from this morning’s presentations at the Knight Foundation meeting today in Chicago: The stenography ends here. The days of chasing cops and government down for raw data (crime blotter, etc.) to parse into 8 inch stories is coming to an end.  Everyblock and the Sunlight Foundation are a good start.  More projects that [...]

Chicago today

Sitting in a Starbuck’s after a good walk around the neighborhood, plotting to blog from my phone today if this fancy new WordPress app is up to the task. I’ll be in the Knight Foundation sessions all day — lunchtime seems like a good time to meet up with anyone at UNITY but not in the [...]

You can be a journalist without a job at a mainstream news organization

That headline seems obvious, no? Then why is it that when journalists see layoffs, buyouts, and newspaper companies in trouble, they sigh and say “Should I stop wasting my time and start applying to advertising agencies?” Really? Here are a few ways you be a journalist without a full-time job at a mainstream news organization: Become a placeblogger.  Report [...]

Rejoined actually. I thought I had updated with my new email address, but when I filled it in trying to sign in, it asked me to fill out a profile. I did so hastily, thinking I was being asked to update, but when I got the confirmation, I realized I had rejoined.

Thanks...glad to be here. Hope this can be a venue too for discussing the growing threats to journalists and press freedom worldwide and how we can work together against these. Peace!

Hey Ryan,

> What brought me to WJ?

I'm interested in networking with journalists working in the Web 2.0 environment.

Why did you start WJ and how is the weather in Santa Cruz?

At the moment, I'm producing an online talk radio show. Would you be available for an interview?
