Get wired to win.

The new iPhone and its apps seem to have everyone abuzz. I'm thinking, how could a newsroom use this to its advantage?

Does anyone use text messages, e-mail alerts or an iPhone app to issue breaking news alerts? If so, how? Has it been useful?

I know there's some of this going on out there -- particularly among broadcasters. Even schools are using some mass texts for closings etc. This forum is a good idea. You might e-mail Gray. Maybe he can spread the word and attract some users

Other papers are doing it too, like the Pocono Record. They use a specific service to administer it for them. I e-mailed the editor there about a couple other things today, so next time I do, I'll ask how they found that service, how it works, etc.

Good idea about e-mailing Steve. There's also another Newspaper Next group on here I just found today - you can find it at http://wiredjournalists.com/group/newspapernextjournalists

Thanks for joining!

I was thinking more along the lines of using an app for local traffic alerts or location-based news feeds. I haven't been able to convince my bosses that it would be worth my time to learn how to make use of the Apple SDK, though.

We're also hoping to be able to take advantage of the GPS capabilities that the iPhone offers. It's going to change everything, for sure.
