Wired Journalists

Get wired to win.

Hooray for this discussion. The technology is mesmerizing and fun, but the underlying challenge is that these new tools allow audiences to form as was never before possible -- and to then create their own, highly individualized forms of media. Our challenge is to understand and serve audience like never before. In fact, MSM could get away with largely ignoring audience because there were so few alternatives. I'd like to see an audience guru in every newsroom of significant size to analyze Web traffic, TALK to people and plan for emerging audiences.

Hi Joe,

I agree. If the Internet genie gave me just one wish, it wouldn't be for content I don't have or technology I can't afford. It would be for a new position devoted to understanding our audience.

I spend at least a third - probably more - of my time analysing traffic data and the various reports we get about our audience. It's not enough. I am just scraping the surface.

I have noticed that Gannett has been hiring directors and VPs for audience dveelopment. Care to talk about how that is working out? Why doesn't the Free Press have one? Or does it?

We don't have one (as far as I know). We are doing our own research, like you, and are frustrated that we are not able to mine the data more. Will let you know if I learn anything.
