Wired Journalists

Get wired to win.

I'm not really sure if I want to theme my blog or anything, but if there's anything that deserves regular comment, it's the sad state of journalism. I can't speak for the other 49 states, but here in Washington, things seem pretty bad.

We've all — and by "we've," I mean the three or four people who may read this — heard about the Seattle Times cuts and I thought I'd pass along this related column by Times columnist Jerry Large for any who haven't read it yet:

Wow, I feel like if anyone is reading this, I just depressed the hell out of that person. Maybe that's what I'll call the blog if I decide to keep it running: Massively Depressing.

Whatever. I'm told it all goes in waves.

Sad. True.

The scariest part is that most people under the age of, say, 30 years old, don't really seem to give a shit. To me, that's the uglier, scarier, larger truth than any declining profit margins. (Of course, try telling that to someone who just got laid off.)

The one thing that truly bothers me about this is that newspapers had the opportunity to adjust their business model long ago, but refused to do so.

I've built two online news operations -- one which turned a profit (after learning my mistakes). It's not hard, but it take opening up to technologists who understand how the Web and digital technologies work. The fact that I was a journalist for 13 years while learning the digital tools of the trade SHOULD be invaluable. Instead, I've found most organizations believe they can continue to operate as they always have.

Then, they lament that they can't make money.

It's not that you can't make money on the web. It's that you have to know how -- and you can do that very easily with the same journalistic standards we've always had.
