A few weeks ago, Paul Bradshaw sent me an email asking if was interested in applying for the MA in Online Journalism he’ll be running from September, at Birmingham City University. Of course my immediate reaction was jumping off the chair and shout… Continue

Through out this Thursday, starting around 10am GMT (London, Lisbon time) we’ll be discussing New Business Models for online media. And we do not want to discuss just the transition from traditional to online media and their revenue sources, but how money can be made online by independent bloggers and journalists too.
We all know that the news industry is facing its most difficult and exciting times, and the purpose of this debate is not to complain about how… Continue

I was organizing some folders in my desktop when i realized i had a bundle of unread pdfs, that covered issues from Krav Maga to Slide Guitar lessons. And Journalism, of course. Some of these manuals and resources were already referred here at The Lake. They are great for students and seasoned professionals, from… Continue

It’s true that the umbrella of what is called “Citizen Journalism” covers a lot that isn’t journalism. But is a picture taken by a professional more valid than any other taken by a mere mortal? Or can’t the factual reporting via Twitter of someone who is experiencing the event be considered as journalism? Lets go step by step.
What is Journalism?…

Journalism is changing: technologically, commercially, in the media, in the formats, in business models. So it is quite natural that the very role of journalists must be renewed and adapted to the unavoidable reality.
But first, we must understand what a journalist is and does:
Journalism is the profession of writing or communicating, formally employed by publications and broadcasters, for the benefit of a particular community of people. The writer or journalist is…

Four months after winning the KNC grant, Dave Cohn is a happy man. He started with a wiki where he presented and tested the different sides to his project, and he quickly managed to fund three stories. Now it is on its way to fund a fourth one. All of this even before having an official website.
The way it works is quite simple: someone - a journalist, a citizen, a community - pitches a subject to be investigated journalistically; the story is then open for funding, and…

“This book is my manifesto for the media as a journalist but also as a citizen of the world. As a journalist you are constantly being told that the news media have enormous power to shape society and events, to change lives and history. So why are we so careless as a society about the future of journalism itself ?” [1]…

I’ve interviewed Hélder Bastos for a project i’m preparing about the changes that are happening in journalism with the new technologies. Hélder Bastos is a teacher at Porto University for the Communication Sciences course, and it was one of the first in Portugal to raise questions about online journalism, which he keeps doing with his blog Travessias Digitais. Here are some of his thoughts.
(…)Definitively, is no longer enough for a journalist to know how to write and have good…

This is the latest and more noticeable crowdsourcing action, and probably the first one with corporate characteristics. When many wonder about the survival of newspapers, i just couldn´t help thinking of what would happen if there was a similar movement to buy one of the many near bankrupt media companies around.
Ebbsfleet United is just one out of the many small-sized minor british league football clubs. But what sets it apart is that, instead of having one russian…

While reading this post by
Paul Conley, i immediatly thought about all the resumes i sent in the last years, and how did they amount to almost nothing. One of the questions i repeated to myself was: does anyone who read my resume fully understands what i can do? I don’t think so. If even the hiring companies aren’t aware of their own needs, how can we sell our own…
