Podcast: David Cohn discusses Spot.Us and community funding

David Cohn launched his new community-funded journalism project, Spot.Us, last week to much fan fare. I don’t know whether or not it can save journalism or if it will fail. My guess is on somewhere in the middle. It will probably be a viable way to fund certain kinds of journalism in certain communities. In many ways [...]

The real challenge that journalism needs

Forget the Knight News Challenge. It’s not what journalism really needs. What journalism needs is a challenge to create local news startups with new business models — to make products that people care about again and that are sustainable without subsidies. Now, that’s a challenge. And instead of this being grant funded, it should be venture [...]

We were never in the newspaper business

We were always in the news business. That’s what our readers and users care about. It’s the news. If people cared about the paper more than the news, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and other beacons of American journalism would have never risen to the world-wide prominence they enjoy today. But [...]

What should the Online Ethics Seal be officially called?

We need your help naming the Online Ethics Seal. The Online Ethics Seal has been the tentative name. That doesn’t mean it’s going to be the finalized name. In fact, many of you have said don’t like the connotation that a “seal” brings. Maybe this is more of a code of ethics. Or, maybe it’s more of [...]

Christian Science Monitor to cease publishing print newspaper

The Christian Science Monitor will end weekday publication of its print edition next April, concentrating on a daily Web model. The Monitor will also be adding a Sunday magazine. Please excuse the wildly-misleading New York Times headline that says the Monitor will be online only. In fact, the new magazine will cost more per issue than [...]

Beat reporters pushing the practice

I'm looking for beat reporters pushing the practice of beat reporting on the Web. Reporters using online tools like blogging, social networking, Wikis, Google Groups, Google Sites, databases, etc to make their reporting better, more modern and more efficient. Best of luck with everything you do at BeatBlogging.Org. Please let me know if I can help out in any way. Oh, and I'm thinking of applying to Stars and Stripes, and was wondering if you had any advice.

Got your mail regarding beatblogging.org, looks very interesting. As an adjunct professor on social media, I keep my eyes peeled for developments in citizen journalism.

Patrick,

A nearly 50 year old journalist checking in on your recent email about using www.beatblogging.org. Covering the fresh produce trade, I started a blog in 2006 that beats on today, with an associated industry discussion group that I manage. I use weekly Google polls, the chat feature for interviews, some audio files and embedded videos. The blog is at www.freshtalk.blogspot.com and the link for the discussion group is on the side of the blog.

Hello, thanks for the luck, I'll need it, quite possibly. School is certainly keeping me busy, but I'm enjoying every minute of it. I read this on your website and really appreciated it:

"Journalism has a bright future for all those who believe. There will always be stories to tell. We just have to find the right ways to tell those stories."

This is true. It's just getting people to believe it. :)

The audacity of ambition — and innovation is really good. Ambition must takeover greed, and erase apathy.
