I am now just over two weeks in to my new job as web editor at the Garden City Telegram and already am I learning a good deal about the realities of working in a newsroom of this size (that is to say, small), the most important of which seems to be, there is no specialization. Open Source Alternatives

In all honesty I haven't tried too many of these... GIMP a very litte bit now, but that is all so far. Thought it might be nice to have some alternatives to programs that cost an arm and a leg if you freelance or if your company isn't yet supporting multimedia.
