Newspaper Ad Departments Need a Philosphy Shift

What if one of the solutions or at least part of the solution to newspapers' revenue problems (besides fixing the economy) was trying to get a whole lot better at something we do already? What if we got a whole lot better at advertising?I'm not saying news organizations shouldn't innovate. We absolutely should look at new ways of not only telling stories and engaging our communities but also delivering advertising and having sales reps who work on behalf of businesses. What I'm talking about…See More

I'm Not Mourning the P-I, I Miss My Newsroom

I've gone through fits of varied emotions when it comes to thinking about the future of newspapers. I've run through the lows of angrily lambasting members of my own industry for its lack of early online development (even when it came to my own paper's layoffs) and despair at the loss of good journalists to the highs of feeling that some of us are finally getting it right, that not only is there hope, there's a bright, glistening future for journalism.I thought that by this morning I could be…See More

Angela Dice commented on Angela Dice's blog post A different way to share news?
"Since writing this, I've heard of some interesting attempts by at least one news group to create an outside-AP means of sharing content, but it doesn't sound like a true collaboration project. I'm trying to start something for…"

Glen Canning commented on Angela Dice's blog post Network for News Collaboration
"Thanks for the post. Informative video but I think you're right about the lack of good suggestions for a new model. And unfortunately that's exactly what we need."

Paul Balcerak commented on Angela Dice's blog post Network for News Collaboration
"Thanks for setting this up, Angela. I was afraid last night might devolve into a "print vs. Web" shout off and my fears were largely realized. Not to pat ourselves on the back too much, but stuff like this — ideas for bringing…"

"You read my mind! I just posted on a similar idea as well, and am trying to set up a news collaboration (mostly for story projects too). Starting with a Publish2 link group. I set up a Ning site this morning: http://newscollaboration.ning.com and…"

Network for News Collaboration

Much was said at last night's No News Is Bad News town-hall style meeting in Seattle -- except good suggestions for new models.

I won't rehash all that was said. You can watch it here and read all the tweets about it using the #nnbn hastag on Twitter.

The one thing I did want to touch on were a couple of ideas about collaboration, something a few of us in… Continue

Fees to Stream High School Sports Games Unfair

I'm trying to better understand the background of how high school athletics organizations were allowed to foist broadcasting fees on media organizations.

It's a new issue to me now that our paper is trying to stream state tournament games. Apparently not only is the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association imposing fees, but some school districts in the state are starting to impose additional fees as well.

It becomes cost prohibitive for small papers and enables… Continue

Why Journos Should Be On Twitter

Just thought I'd share a post on Twitter for the non-Twitter folks out there. Our news reporters and editors sat in on a Poynter NewsU.org training session on Twitter basics. It got at least two new reporters on Twitter and two additional promises to try, giving us at least 75% of our reporters and editors on or planning to be on Twitter. Yay!

Poynter folks gave a good explanation of Twitter basics (course is $30 on… Continue
