CMS for video content at newspapers

I'm doing research on how newspapers/magazines are managing all of the video that is now being gathered. Clearly, some papers have lots more than others, but how is it being managed? Is there a policy on how to archive the footage? Or are the tapes (footage) destroyed after a set period of time and only the final/published version archived? Are the tapes and discs just thrown in a drawer? And also, what do people think, is there a need right now to put such a system in place? I come from a still background and my work flow includes keeping and captioning as much as I can.
